With a word he heals the sick; he gives sight to the blind; he cleanses the lepers. And what is even more serious, he announces the forgiveness of sins. The law provides a proper procedure for the forgiveness of sins: one goes to the temple and offers the necessary sacrifices and through the mediation of the priest one receives forgiveness. Jesus has come to set people free. His words have an extraordinary authority. They have power. And yet they are words of grace and kindness. But at the same time they are words as sharp as a razor.
The fact that people who have been dead for three days don't rise again on the third day was well known long before the invention of computers. No! The Church has always recognized that this is something utterly unique, something which cannot be explained in terms of the ordinary laws of physics and chemistry. But there is one analogy for it, one other fact which cannot be explained by the laws of physics and chemistry and biologyand that is the fact of creation, the fact that a world has come into existence.
The two Israelite kingdoms of Israel and Judah have been destroyed. Their cities are in ruins, their people have been carried away captive and their temple has been burned to the ground. It looks as if the end of the line has come. What has become of the great promises to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? What has become of the covenant with Moses? Of the promise that Israel is to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation on behalf of all the nations of the world? ' And is it not remarkable that in the same psalms we still hear, out of the depths of humiliation and suffering, this triumphant cry: 'Our God reigns and shall reign over all the nations'.
