Speakers should not be able to avoid using them (this criterion again favours phonological over some types of grammatical features), though there is no need for 'immunity from conscious distortion', since the way speakers 'distort' their use of different variants (assuming such distortion can be identified in some valid way) can be an important clue to their prestige value. It is also desirable that a variable should be an 'integral part of some larger structure': the consequences of variation in one part of a system for the rest of that system are an important aspect of the whole picture.

The division may of course be an oversimplification: Crystal and Davy (1969:87) suggested that perhaps six categories of formality might be needed. On the other hand, the difficulties frequently encountered in distinguishing casual and formal speech lead to a more or less opposite criticism: that the division is impracticable. Wolfram (1969) and Wolfram and Fasold (1974) pointed out that workers on the Detroit survey had great difficulty in dis­ tinguishing the two and so treated all conversation as one style.

The aim of the survey must be clearly defined: is it to collect facts, say, or is it to gauge opinions? In the former case the framing of questions is not too difficult, and they can be further 'explained' without danger, but in the latter the precise wording may be important. Questions must always be in simple language, yet they have to be sufficiently specific; they must not 'lead' an informant and influence his answer.
