Microscale lens was used to measure air core diameter due to refraction of Perspex wall thickness and water inside the swirl chamber as shown below (Fig. 3). This lens was placed inside the swirl chamber with full of water and the photograph was taken before the cold flow test started (Fig. 3a). The location of camera was set at 1 meter away from spray formation for all tests. This distance was chosen due to clear images visualization captured by camera and to avoid water vapor from reaching the camera lens.

For both rotational speeds, the velocity value is highest for curved 2 brake disk design inside the flow passage. However, the highest velocity for curved 2 has a very small spread area as compared to more evenly distributed higher velocity region for curved 1 design. The contour plot also predicts an interesting pattern in terms of the velocity concentration in the frontal and rear side of the flow passage. The velocity is concentrated towards frontal side of the flow passage for curved designs similar to the baseline design as shown in Fig.
