In the I-4 constellation, three satellites in geosynchronous orbit provide global beam and spot beam of the major landmasses and northern oceans. The Inmarsat constellation provides telephone circuits as well as data link, so it uses a complex set of protocols over several different types of channels using different signals in space. In the aeroclassic services, a packet channel is used to send and receive ACARS or cabin packet data messages. The packet channel is established when the avionics satellite data unit (SDU) logs on to a satellite ground earth station (GES).

The performance areas focus on accommodating increase in traffic in a safe and efficient manner with environmentally friendly methods. SESAR trials have proven success in select airports. 5 Summary For both concepts, NEXTGEN and SESAR, the operations are based on shared net-centric information to aid collaborative decision making by all stakeholders and trajectory-based operations for efficient use of resources in both air and ground. There are differences between the two systems in the way the data are compiled and distributed; while NextGen is more centralized, SESAR is distributed.

The largest source of error is delay as the radio signals pass through the ionosphere. The delay is frequency dependent. Hence, by receiving any two of L1, L2, and L5, an aircraft corrects the ionospheric delay to first order. By receiving all three, it can correct the ionospheric delay to second order. Misra and Enge (2001) and Parkinson and Spilker (1996) describe the GPS in detail. GPS offers better than 20 m ranging errors on a moving aircraft to civil users and 5 m ranging errors to military users.
