They are thought to correspond partly to the structures called '^Golgi apparatus'^ by light microscopists, and to play a role in the accumulation and perhaps transfor mation of substances synthesised by the cell. Further, most cells contain a structure, called ''endoplasmic reticulum'^ by Porter, but actually consisting of a system of cisternae and pouches lined by double membranes. These mem branes may be covereji on their outer side by innumerable small granules, about 150 A in diameter, the ribosomes.

Could it not be that the egg has a complicated spatial structure, localised, however, not in its cytoplasm but in the nucleus, in which, after all, the spatial multiplicity of the future embryo might be preformed in some way or another ? Weismann advocated this hypothesis in 1892. In his opinion, the nucleus of the fertilised egg contained the id, a threedimensional structure, consisting of material particles, the determinants. In the course of the nuclear divisions during cleavage the id would be distributed over the various cleavage nuclei.

Gradient systems play an important role, for instance, in the development of sea urchin eggs. Cleavage in these eggs is very regular. It results in a blástula, a vesicle with a wall consisting of a single layer of cells with cilia on their outer surfaces. In the next stage, the wall of the blástula invaginates at the vegetative pole, thereby forming the archenteron of an embryo called a gastrula (Fig. 31). At the animal pole the gastrula possesses a long tuft of cilia (Fig. 15a). The further develop ment of a gastrula into a pluteus larva involves the growth of long "arms", and the secretion of a skeleton of calcareous rods by cells originating from the vegetative wall of the blástula.
